General information, not legal advice. KayaCalendar gives general information based on the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994, presidential declarations of special public holidays published on gov.za, and the public school calendars gazetted by the Minister of Basic Education. It is not legal advice and is not a government website. The President can declare extra public holidays, and provinces, schools and employers may set their own arrangements, so check important dates with the official source. Leave entitlements, notice periods and legal deadlines can count days differently. The result is a guide.
How the count works
Each date in the range is checked in turn. Saturdays and Sundays are skipped (or only Sundays on a six-day week), then any public holiday on a working day. The breakdown lists every public holiday that was skipped.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as a working day?
Monday to Friday, unless the day is a public holiday. Tick the Saturday option if you work a six-day week. A public holiday on a Saturday then also counts as a day off.
Are public holidays on a Sunday included?
Yes. When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday after it is a public holiday (section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act), and the calculator skips that Monday.
Does it count the start date?
By default yes, like counting the days of a period that starts that morning. Untick the option to start counting the day after. In 'add working days' mode counting always starts the day after the start date.
Which years are covered?
2026 to 2028. Outside those years only weekends are skipped, and the result shows a warning.
Can I use this for legal deadlines?
As a guide only. Court rules, the Labour Relations Act and contracts can define 'days' or 'court days' differently, so check the rule that applies and get advice for anything important.
Does it know about provincial or school holidays?
No. South Africa's public holidays are national. School holidays are not public holidays; see the school terms pages for those.
